What is hard water?

Calcium (Ca)
Magnesium (Mg)

The term hardness refers to the quantity of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. These minerals, which come primarily from limestone type rock formations, are found to some degree in almost all natural waters. Calcium and magnesium cause problems for two principal reasons:

When the water is warmed, they precipitate out of solution and form a hard, rock-like scale. This scale accelerates corrosion, restricts flow, and reduces heat transfer in water heaters and boilers.
When they combine with soap, they react to form a curd, which interferes with cleaning, dries out skin, and leaves deposits on plumbing and clothes (bathtub ring; ring around the collar).
Hardness is measured in parts per million (or the equivalent mg/L) or in grains per gallon (gpg). Note: if the water analysis is given in ppm as CaCO3 then 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm. There is no established limit for the acceptable level of hardness in water, but it is generally considered to become problematic at around 3 gpg.

Levels of hardness are referred to as follows:

Soft Water: 0 - 1 grains per gallon (gpg)
Slightly Hard Water: 1 - 4 grains per gallon (gpg)
Moderately Hard Water: 4 - 7 grains per gallon (gpg)
Hard Water: 7 - 10 grains per gallon (gpg)
Very Hard Water: Over 10 grains per gallon (gpg)

The reduction or removal of calcium and magnesium ions, which are the principal cause of hardness in water.

What is a water softener?

A water softener is a water treatment device in which hard water is passed through a bed of filtration media for the purpose of exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions.

Why do I need a water softener?

Water softening prevents hard water soap curd, lime scum in the sink and bathtub. White chalky scale in your pipes, hot water heaters, shower doors, dishes, glassware, and fixtures. Soft water makes a difference! Our home water softeners will make you feel better bathing, improve your water, and allow soaps and detergents to clean better.
 
How much water does a water softener use?
 
Truly efficient - Our whole house water softeners are equipped with a digital metered control valve that will electronically measure and display the amount of water you use before it begins it's regeneration cycle. Therefore, eliminating unnecessary regenerations. Water softeners are backwashing systems that automatically remove the trapped hard water minerals within the filter bed and washes them down the drain. This is accomplished with the electronic control valve that is mounted on top of the softener .This valve is controlled by a meter, that calculates the amount of water being used.Once the meter reaches x amount of gallons, It then initiates the backwash cycle that cleans the bed of filtration media and resets it for the next period of filtration.

What type of maintenance does a water softener need?

Just add either potassium or sodium pellets. Pellets are added to the brine tank of the softener. The more often a softener is regenerated, the more often pellets need to be added. Typically, water softener pellets are checked once or every other month. Will a water softener provide quality drinking water?

We offer complete water softener packages that will soften your hard water, provide chlorine bad tastes, and odor filtration and for customers who want that bottled water taste we offer an optional reverse osmosis drinking water filter. Will those who prefer to drink soft water be deprived of any minerals deemed necessary for good health?
No. The minerals necessary towards your daily diet come from your food.
Neither hard nor softened water provide any significant quantity of minerals. For example, a glass of milk contains 4 times the amount of calcium, as does a glass of water!
 
How much sodium is in softened water?
A normal daily intake of sodium for an adult is approx. 3,000 mg.
Many natural and manufactured foods and drinks contribute to this daily intake. As a guide, you would need to drink 75 glasses of softened water to achieve your daily intake! Typical examples of sodium levels are: - One glass of milk contains 160 mg - One slice of bread contains 190 mg - A 12 oz can of diet soda typically contains between 30 and 70 mg of sodium - One glass of softened water contains approximately 40 mg. I do not want to add sodium to my water softener, Is there an alternative to sodium pellets?
Yes, our softening systems can use potassium-based pellets, not sodium, to soften water. So, your water is not only soft, but it's sodium free. Water Softening
Water Softeners are used to treat hard water. They work by replacing the calcium and magnesium in the water with either potassium or sodium. Our well water softeners will also remove large amounts of iron and manganese.
 
How RainDance Water Systems Water Softeners Work
Water softeners operate on a ion exchange process. In this process, water passes through a resin media bed. The resin is saturated with either potssium or sodium. The ion exchange process takes place as hard water passes through the softening resin. The hard water minerals (calicum,magnesium) attach themselves to the resin beads while sodium or potassium on the resin is released into the water. When the resin becomes saturated with hard water (calcium and magnesium), it must be recharged. The recharging is done by passing a brine solution through the resin. The potassium or sodium replaces the calcium and magnesium which are discharged in the waste water.

Magnetic Water Conditioners or Physical Water Softeners work by altering the Calcium ions (hard water scale) such that they loose their ability to cause adhesive scale to your fixtures.
 
How RainDance Water Systems Magnetic Water Conditioners Work
By passing water through a magnetic field, the calcium ion's are altered in such a way that they loose their ability to cause scale. The benefits are numerous; although the water is not technically soft, it has the useful properties of soft water, that is, it will reduce limescale in your pipes thus increasing heating efficiency and lengthening the lifespan of any clothes washed in the conditioned water. We solve hard water problems problems through the use of a 3-step process:
1 Step: The filtered water passes through a spring-loaded chamber which creates a small pressure drop (unnoticable to you). This pressure drop initiates the formation of calcium hardness crystals.
2 Step:The calcium hardness crystals then pass through a catalytic surface which greatly multiplies the number of crystals. It is the last two steps (pressure drop & catalytic surface) that makes our treatment significantly more effective than other magnetic treatment systems.
3 Step:The multitude of calcium crystals pass through a strong magnetic field which serves to hold the crystals in suspension rendering them harmless up to 72 hours to your plumbing & plumbing fixtures.The entire process bonds calcium ions to each other rather than to your plumbing and plumbing fixtures. A simple damp cloth (if at all) is more than sufficient to remove any residual mineral deposits rather than the usual abrasives and "elbow grease" that is normally required. The surface tension of the water is also reduced which results in a higher quality of water absorption into the human body and plant life.
