What is hard water?

Calcium (Ca)
Magnesium (Mg)

The term hardness refers to the quantity of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. These minerals, which come primarily from limestone type rock formations, are found to some degree in almost all natural waters. Calcium and magnesium cause problems for two principal reasons:

When the water is warmed, they precipitate out of solution and form a hard, rock-like scale. This scale accelerates corrosion, restricts flow, and reduces heat transfer in water heaters and boilers.
When they combine with soap, they react to form a curd, which interferes with cleaning, dries out skin, and leaves deposits on plumbing and clothes (bathtub ring; ring around the collar).
Hardness is measured in parts per million (or the equivalent mg/L) or in grains per gallon (gpg). Note: if the water analysis is given in ppm as CaCO3 then 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm. There is no established limit for the acceptable level of hardness in water, but it is generally considered to become problematic at around 3 gpg.

Levels of hardness are referred to as follows:

Soft Water: 0 - 1 grains per gallon (gpg)
Slightly Hard Water: 1 - 4 grains per gallon (gpg)
Moderately Hard Water: 4 - 7 grains per gallon (gpg)
Hard Water: 7 - 10 grains per gallon (gpg)
Very Hard Water: Over 10 grains per gallon (gpg)

The RainDanceMAX Package listed below incorporates all of the many softening features and reverse osmosis benefits of our RainDanceULTRA Package but with the addition of whole house ultraviolet uv system. Assurance: RainDanceMAX Packages includes the SPV-15 UV system which carries NSF/ANSI Standard 55, Class A certification and provides a flow rate of 15.0 gpm. This UV system comes with the feature-laden Platinum™ controller coupled with the Flow-Pace™ UV intensity monitor. This combination allows for 2-stage flow pacing whereby half-power is provided to the lamps in conditions of no flow and full-power when the water is running. This allows the system to operate with minimal power requirements and reduced heat build-up. The Platinum™ controller provides constant output current and a universal power input, as well as visually displaying % UV intensity, remaining lamp life and total hours of operation.

The reduction or removal of calcium and magnesium ions, which are the principal cause of hardness in water.

What is a water softener?

A water softener is a water treatment device in which hard water is passed through a bed of filtration media for the purpose of exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions.

Why do I need a water softener?

Water softening prevents hard water soap curd, lime scum in the sink and bathtub. White chalky scale in your pipes, hot water heaters, shower doors, dishes, glassware, and fixtures. Soft water makes a difference! Our home water softeners will make you feel better bathing, improve your water, and allow soaps and detergents to clean better.
 
How much water does a water softener use?
 
Truly efficient - Our whole house water softeners are equipped with a digital metered control valve that will electronically measure and display the amount of water you use before it begins it's regeneration cycle. Therefore, eliminating unnecessary regenerations. Water softeners are backwashing systems that automatically remove the trapped hard water minerals within the filter bed and washes them down the drain. This is accomplished with the electronic control valve that is mounted on top of the softener .This valve is controlled by a meter, that calculates the amount of water being used.Once the meter reaches x amount of gallons, It then initiates the backwash cycle that cleans the bed of filtration media and resets it for the next period of filtration.

What type of maintenance does a water softener need?

Just add either potassium or sodium pellets. Pellets are added to the brine tank of the softener. The more often a softener is regenerated, the more often pellets need to be added. Typically, water softener pellets are checked once or every other month. Will a water softener provide quality drinking water?

Will those who prefer to drink soft water be deprived of any minerals deemed necessary for good health?
No. The minerals necessary towards your daily diet come from your food.
Neither hard nor softened water provide any significant quantity of minerals. For example, a glass of milk contains 4 times the amount of calcium, as does a glass of water!
 
How much sodium is in softened water?
A normal daily intake of sodium for an adult is approx. 3,000 mg.
Many natural and manufactured foods and drinks contribute to this daily intake. As a guide, you would need to drink 75 glasses of softened water to achieve your daily intake! Typical examples of sodium levels are: - One glass of milk contains 160 mg - One slice of bread contains 190 mg - A 12 oz can of diet soda typically contains between 30 and 70 mg of sodium - One glass of softened water contains approximately 40 mg. I do not want to add sodium to my water softener, Is there an alternative to sodium pellets?
Yes, our softening systems can use potassium-based pellets, not sodium, to soften water. So, your water is not only soft, but it's sodium free. Water Softening
Water Softeners are used to treat hard water. They work by replacing the calcium and magnesium in the water with either potassium or sodium. Our well water softeners will also remove large amounts of iron and manganese.
 
How RainDance Water Systems Water Softeners Work
Water softeners operate on a ion exchange process. In this process, water passes through a resin media bed. The resin is saturated with either potssium or sodium. The ion exchange process takes place as hard water passes through the softening resin. The hard water minerals (calicum,magnesium) attach themselves to the resin beads while sodium or potassium on the resin is released into the water. When the resin becomes saturated with hard water (calcium and magnesium), it must be recharged. The recharging is done by passing a brine solution through the resin. The potassium or sodium replaces the calcium and magnesium which are discharged in the waste water.

Saltless Water Conditioners or no-salt hard water conditioners work by altering the Calcium ions (hard water scale) such that they loose their ability to cause adhesive scale to your fixtures.
 
How The RDWS-Gold Package Saltless Water Conditioner Filter Systems Work Offered By RainDance Water Systems
First, water enters the pre-sediment filter system to remove sediment, rust, dirt and debris. Second, clean water now enters the hard water scale prevention media. This media transforms calcium ions (hard water) into calcium crystals , which are stable and cannot attach to pipes, surfaces, hardware, or heat exchanger components. These crystals are so small they are easily rinsed away by water flow. Note: this is not a spot free system - A simple damp cloth (if at all) is more than sufficient to remove any residual mineral deposits. Third and lastly, chlorine bad tastes and odors are filtered through our a 0.6um micron carbon filtration system "The Chlorine Taste and Odor Guzzler" to provide whole house drinking water filtration.
