The benefits of the Sulfate Eater versus a whole house reverse osmosis system: The Sulfate Eater is more economical costing thousands less than a whole home ro. Its space saving - the Sulfate Eater requires only 2 tanks whereas a whole home ro requires many pieces of equipment including a large water storage tank. The Sulfate Eater not only removes high sulfates it also softens hard water! A whole house reverse osmosis system requires a separate water softener. Our Sulfate Eater uses NSF Approved Certified 61 filtration media. Easy To Use, Service & Install: The Sulfate Eater uses a water efficient metered initiated automatic backwashing control valve and allows the user to use either standard sodium water softener pellets or use the sodium-free potassium pellet option!
What Are Sulfates: Sulfate, which is a combination of sulfur and oxygen (SO4), exists as a dissolved salt in the water. As such it is colorless and odorless. It is not to be confused with the gas in the water that causes a rotten egg odor. This is a combination of Hydrogen and sulfur (H2S). Removal technology is totally different for the two forms of sulfur.
Can I Drink Well Water With High Sulfates? Sulfates in drinking water currently has a Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level (SMCL) of 250 ppm (mg/l). At this level or above, sulfates can cause diarrhea and resulting de-hydration. This condition is most severe in infants, the elderly, and people with other illnesses. Also, high sulfates cause fluid and resulting weight loss in all animals. Sulfates can be reduced by approximately 80% with our under counter household RO units. About 95% is removed by high pressure commercial RO units and whole house reverse osmosis. An economical alternative to RO is our Sulfate Eater, a special softener utilizing resins that are selective to sulfates. With these units, the sulfates are exchanged for chlorides. There are no restrictions on or known harmful effects associated with chlorides in the water. Sulfate content up to 1,500 ppm (mg/l) can easily be handled in this manner. The Twin Alternating Sulfate Eater is used where there is a high demand for sulfate treatment at flow rates or higher water usage than those obtainable through a single water softening system.
The Sulfate Eater alternating twin tanks provide an uninterrupted supply of soft filtered water to your home or business. These systems feature two tanks for treating well water. Water is softened and filtered in one tank while the other is in a standby mode. When the softening capacity of the first tank is reached, the system automatically switches tanks. The first tank is then recharged. This cycle is repeated when the second tank reaches its capacity point.
Compare Sulfate Filters: Single-tank sulfate filters can’t regenerate and filter your sulfate & hard water at the same time, so there may be times that untreated sulfate and hard water flows into the plumbing.
